Netball
Primary Rules
Discuss the most significant primary rules of Netball with students in regard to player safety, stretching prior to participation and the appearnace of the field of play (the court and its lines).
The court is divided into thirds. For students to become accustomed to this conduct small sided warm up games to establish recognition of this prior to acknowledging action rules.
Warm Up
Dynamic stretching, with different stretches taking place in the three different zones
- leg flicks, lunges, high knees, arm side raises.
-Using surplus markers, have students break off into two teams, and play a game og "hills and valleys" where one team attempts to have all the markers upturned and the other team downturned in a minute timeframe. Emphasize safety and no contact, "guarding" of markers or returning instantly to a marker.
Setting Up
As
in the picture below, designate the three movement zones, using
different coloured marks or visual signs to remind. Upon creating teams,
use sashes to visually aid deciphering team members.
For initial warm up, play this game.
Modification 1:
-Play this game, but create 2+ teams that must maintain even number of players per square. For example, if teams are made up of 6 players per side, only two players can be in the third at any one time.
*If available use appropriate contemporary music to accompany students participation as little communication is required at this stage.
Activity 1.
-Incorporate a ball, no contact, passing between the different zones (still performing the movement skill of leap, hop, jump), allow individual possession for 4 seconds. Team that maintains possession for the longest time. Also implement no "pass-back" rule. Continue rule of even players per zone.
Progression
-Establish a goal, such as a hoop or markers at either end of the court.
-Bring into primary rules the concept of the goal key, with only the inividual in the goal key allowed toattempt shot at goal.
*Alternative Participation
- Students take on SEPEP roles, such as referree, time keeper, peer assessor using the relevant worksheets.
