Netball - Lesson Progression 2 - Theoretical Aspects - Introduction



History

Derived from early forms of basketball, Netball was originally intended as a female alternative to Basketball, however has since grown to be played by people of all genders in more than 20 million people in 80 different countries (INF - Internation Netball Federation).

Netball comes under the heading of invasion sport, as it along with similar skilled sports of korfball, Tchoukball, Slamball, Goalball, European Handball and of course basketball, require one team to maintain possession whilst travelling into their opponents territory to score.

Playing Area - The Court




Game - Play
It is a team sport in which two opposing teams compete for possession of the ball. "Attack" (Offense) who currently have possesion and "Defence" who are trying to restrain the "Offensive" team from scoring. When neither team has possession it is known as a contest for the ball.
